Susan does a wonderful job of painting life in the Wild West. Her vivid descriptions transported one directly into the town of Fergus. And herein I believe lies the real character of the book - the time period itself. The book did not center on any one person or even a hero and heroine. There were so many characters and points of view presented. And certain chapters seemed achingly long in their description of one event that, at times, I was tempted to skip pages to get to the meat of the chapter. I wish the author had just concentrated on the one couple for this book - Gert and the sheriff. It would have been nice to get to know them. But in essence, this book is about the town and women taking over via the Shooting Club. And that's not necessarily a bad thing, if you know what to expect. This is a book that I won at Goodreads which I thought would be a mystery, and then it arrived and the cover looked like a romance! Luckily it was much more mystery than romance, and an interesting take on pioneer life in Idaho. Once you get past the accents in the dialogue, the story is a good one. The women of this novel are ahead of their time, so it will be interesting to see where else this series will go.
