The Shoemaker's Wife (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

This was a tough one. There were parts in this book that I really liked so I had a hard time choosing between 3 or 4 stars. I liked Enza's character very much and reading about her life and about her friends in America and the Met. Ciro was also interesting though at times I grew quite frustrated with him.Luckily his character improved somewhat as the story went on. Also, the book kept repeating itself at points which also pulled the amount of stars to a three. However, the descriptions are very beautiful at times, and very detailed. I coud actually see the Italian Alps when I read the book. All in all, I think it is a very entertaining read with lovely descriptions, romance and of course Italy. A slow-moving (as it should be as it's a tale of two peoples' entire lives), beautiful story. It took me a while to get going with this one, but it was worthwhile to stick with it. I know this is based on the author's grandparents' love story, so I'd be really interested to know how much was from real life and how much was fictionalized (not that it really matters, it's lovely either way). I never had any desire to visit Italy prior to reading this, but I definitely do now. This book definitely increased my appreciation of the value that immigrants add to our country. Really lovely story.
