The Sisters From Hardscrabble Bay (2010) - Plot & Excerpts
Emma still says she feels bad about that—taking our cow. I know it’s not fair, but for the longest time I resented Emma—I was mean to her. I thought if she’d never been born, I’d still have my mother. I never said it out loud to her, but I thought about it plenty. It wasn’t till years later, when she had TB and I used to go see her in the sanatorium before she got cured, that I got to like her. Anyhow, that was the first cow I can remember, and after her we got Tater and some others, and then Bossy. But I never knew where calves came from. This is what education we had. I mean, there was no one to tell us the facts of life. What Dad always did if there was a calf born or a lamb or something else, he’d say he found something out in the straw. So we’d go out and look in the barn, and there it’d be in a heap of straw. That’s what he always did. Well, I had this little heifer, Bossy. It was a cute thing—slender legs, just like a deer. After I’d had her for a year or so, Dad said she was going to have a baby.
