The parents of the Miller family were great, don’t get me wrong, they made me feel very welcome and made sure I had everything I needed. However, the most amazing thing about the Millers was their daughter, Tasha. I arrived at their house on a Thursday in the middle of the afternoon and did my best to settle in, I was tired from the flight and already missing my family but I was also excited about the upcoming year. I’d actually finished high school in my own country but had received a placement on the exchange programme for the following year. It was a strange feeling to know I was going back to school and would be a year older than most people, having already turned eighteen but an opportunity I couldn’t miss. I never could have afforded to travel to America, let alone live there for a year, without the assistance of the programme. The Millers told me about their daughter, about how she had started school a year late because of an illness when she was young so she was actually the same age as me.
