Rio whispered to herself as she clipped the lead onto Fleur’s halter and led the tall mare out into the aisle. She’d have to pass him again as he stood in the door to the barn talking to Sadie. Something about the man made her nervous, gave her the same undeniable feeling from last night at the cabin, when she thought someone watched her. She certainly wouldn’t have been surprised if this man had been the one lying in wait. He’d been giving her a hard stare since they met. Staying cool under his scrutiny would be a challenge. With her luck he’d be around more to check up on her. He’d studied her with nothing but pure distrust. She had seen that expression plenty of times before and no doubt she’d see it again. Living on the road, she’d become accustomed to it. He stood aside and let her pass as she led the mare outside. Although he and Sadie were deep in conversation, his attention remained glued on her.
