The Sweet Gum Tree took my breath away. It is one of the most beautiful stories I have ever read. Amazing and heartwarming! This book had me cringing, yearning and wanting these characters to find their way back to each other!“You can’t turn love on and off like a light switch, no matter how hard you try. All you can do is wall it off, one brick at a time, until you’ve created an impenetrable fortress around your emotions. And once that fortress is built, you camouflage it so well that even you can’t see it anymore.” I have had The Sweet Gum Tree on my TBR list for a very long time. It went to .99 on AMAZON and I quickly one clicked and the rest is History. This was a GR recommendation by the way and I don't usually go by them but this was a perfect fit for me.A first love/ second chance romance that is written with perfection. This is my first Katherine Allred book but it will not be the last. She immediately drew me in with her picture of the South and Alix's crazy southern family. I loved how protective Nick was of Alix and how the relationship was a friendship that grew into love. I have to say I was not really sure what was going on with Nick and why he couldn't commit to Alix but as soon as her returned 15years later I was tuned in. I like that it was not an easy reunion for Alix and Nick the innocence that Alix had was lost but the love was not.So the thing is I loved it but I just can't give it 5 stars. Trying to express why is going to be hard because I'm not entirely sure. It may be Alix's first POV. I think it was great for the first half of the book but I needed more from Nick in the second half. I just wasn't getting what I needed with her narration. The HEA is wonderful and it is a sweet book, with lots of crying in between. For some reason books that take place in the South just scream summer reading to me. Pick it up if it is still on sale. Such a treat for under a dollar.
What do You think about The Sweet Gum Tree (2005)?
I absolutely LOVED the beginning of this book! It just went downhill after the 40% mark :(
