The Sweetness Of Forgetting (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

Wow! beautiful story. This is an inter-generational book about an adult granddaughter, her grandmother with growing senility, her teenaged daughter, her ex-husband and his young adult girlfriend, and a cast of small-town people who are more or less helpful. The central character is running a family bakery in small town Cape Cod when the story begins. She is newly divorced and adjusting economically and emotionally. Memories recovered by her grandmother set her out on a quest to find her roots and her French family. She finds out how deeply her family was touched by World War II (in Paris.) In the process, she grows personally, as she learns about generosity on both sides of the Atlantic. She learns about trust, true love and faith. The story involves Christians, Jews and Muslims and a French resistance underground that was heartwarming news to me. This is one of the best books I have read in a awhile and I have read many books this year alone. The idea of Besa is something I believe we need now more than ever. This is a story of learning to open your heart to love maybe again or maybe for the first time. Not necessarily romantic love, although this book has romance. It is also a story of healing from the most difficult pains imaginable. The pain of the holocaust, of regret, of the horrors man can inflict on the innocent. It is also a story of bringing together religions that this world seems to find different. They are not, at their core, different. Read this book, learn what BSA means and should man to you!
