The Training Of A Marquess (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

Historical English romance with a widow and a widower that recently loss their first born children with the simultaneous deaths of their partners who had never loved them. So this is more then a little bit second chances at love because they both had never truly had that in their lives until they met each other. Lady Claire Tremaine, the widowed Marchioness of Derebourne lost everything the day her 2 week old son and husband died and will now get thrown out of her house because her deceased husband made no provisions for her after his death. Lady Claire doesn't know that the exact opposite is going to happen when Lord Chastain Warren, the Earl of Kensington, the newly made Marquess of Derebourne arrives to Claire's home. I liked how opened minded Lord Chase was to everything in his life, towards his business, his adopted sons and especially towards the women in his life. Although it is almost like the author made the perfect man and it threw me off a bit in the story that they only thing holding back the HEA, was Lord Chase's ridiculous promise to never marry again. I suppose everyone makes nonsense vows in moments of stress (death threats, heart break, etc...)This was a sweet romance with two scared and broken hearted kind people. Claire had never been loved which was really sad but her journey towards friendship and love.332 pages and kindle freebie3 stars I crazy-loved The Letter so much, that I was thrilled to see the author going backwards in her books and writing the love story of one of the married couples who were secondary characters in her first book. I do hope that she will continue further backwards and write the love story of Aubrey and Katie who were secondary characters in both books. This was an absolutely delightful book filled with pain and tragedy giving way to warmth and humor as the damaged characters move forward with their lives. I love the rare romance novels in which it is the heroine who knows what she wants and is unambiguous and determined to get him--poor baby, he doesn't stand a chance. It is just a question of seeing just what she intends to do to show him what we all know is best for him. The application of the heroine's horse-sense to a damaged and obstinate human male was developed skillfully and beautifully. As in The Letter, the plotter enlists a host of delightful allies as co-conspirators to her plan, who add a lot to the read. The street-wise identical twins with opposite personalities were such an asset to the story. Not every author can write good kids' characters, but Ms. Owens certainly succeeded here.
