The Truth About Leo (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

(I'm reviewing the audio version of the story)This book was difficult to listen to. Dagmar Marie Sophie is a princess who is about to be out on her own when her cousin demands he is tired of being responsible for her and insists she find family to care for her. Dagmar along with her companion would be cast out without a place to go and with no money. When Dagmar's companion finds a wounded man in the garden, Dagmar is content to let him stay out there. After all, how can she possibly care for an injured man when her own resources are so strained? When they dig through the man's possessions, they find out that he might be an English man of some importance. Dagmar reluctantly agrees to help the injured man in the hopes that she can either hold him for ransom or otherwise use him to her advantage. Dagmar and her companion concoct a plan for Dagmar to marry the injured man who is delusional with fever as he might die soon and then Dagmar could benefit from the marriage. When Leopold Ernst George Mortimer, earl and spy for England wakes up he finds he is on a ship back to England rather than on his spy mission and is wed to a woman he has no memory of meeting. Even though he is an earl, he is renting apartments and has no home to return to with his new wife Dagmar and her companion when they reach England. Despite being wed while simi-conscious and delusional, Dagmar has huge breasts (which the story repeats time and time again) and so he decides to give the marriage a try. What follows is an odd love story and a murder mystery as a random person bumps into them and are looking for a murderer whose paths, of course, they happen to cross.Dagmar is an air headed princess and she reminds us of her princess status approximately every 4 lines. She's supposed to be flighty and simple sounding and Alison Larkin does an excellent job narrating her as a complete air head. After hours of listening to this CD I could not wait for the story to end. Her babble missed it's mark at being cute and was just painful. The sex scenes were particularly odd. I think the author was going for funny, but very much missed the mark. The story was predictable, not particularly believable, and the characters were very shallow. The narration was difficult to listen to, but I can't determine if it was an excellent reading job trying to portray a shallow princess or just an annoying reading. Either way, I could only give this book 1 star. This was not one of my favorites. It had humor, romance and mystery. It felt like there was almost TOO much going on and I couldn't keep track. The Jail scene was off the chain in a bad way. I understand the author was trying to be funny but it bordered on the ridiculous. Nicks and Phem's secondary romance felt like it was just thrown in there. I guess maybe I needed to read the first 3 books in the series but because I hadn't a lot of the scenes were over the top confusing.
