The Turning: A Tale Of The Living Dead - Plot & Excerpts

There was ten of them, clumped together like cotton balls dipped in molasses, all with their backs to him, staring at an abandoned car.  When he saw them, he immediately backpedaled but it was too late; the noise of his movements and the proximity of his body heat had attracted their attention.
The dead turned as one, moaned, and surged forward after him.  Jeff fell against the side of the building, took off his rifle, and then decided against using.  They were in too close for the weapon to be effective, which was a shame, given he'd just found bullets for it days before.  He slid the shotgun off his other shoulder, leveled the gun, and fired.
Buckshot tore through the first two zombies, both farmers, wearing overalls, trucker hats, and flannel shirts.  They were cut nearly in half, their stomachs blown out behind them, the pellets carving great chunks of flesh and intestines and thick, syrupy black blood.  Both Farmers toppled forward.  When they hit the ground, they clawed at the concrete, aged and cracked fingernails splitting as they hauled their useless bodies forward.
