The Unfinished Journals Of Elizabeth D (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
A woman (Elizabeth D.) dies a premature death and leaves her many journals to her friend, not to her husband. The friend has a little backlash from the husband, but just the same spends the summer reading all the many journals and learning about the friend she really never knew.In the journals we see Elizabeth D. struggling with motherhood, wifehood, and while we’re on this roll, friendship-hood. And what we learn is that it is hard to maneuver relationships while still being true to the very complex self. Elizabeth D.’s struggles also include the career vs stay at home mom issue and as many times as authors write about this – or women try to figure this out in real life – there just does not seem to be any good answer.Sorry to be cynical about men, but, had Elizabeth D left her journals to her husband – without any fanfare that caused jealousy – I wonder if he would have ever thought to read them? And if he maybe read one or two, is there any chance that he would have read all of them? Perhaps Elizabeth D. just wanted to finally be known, by someone, anyone, and thus she left her journals to the person with the greatest chance of reading them. I liked this book so much. I read half of it yesterday and then finished it today, completely neglecting all my errands and chores. I have every intention of writing a thoughtful review of this book - because it has given me so much to think about. All about life's expectations and secrets and friendships and the way we realize too late that we didn't really know the people we thought we knew best.
