The Unremarkable Heart And Other Stories (2010) - Plot & Excerpts
As always, I consumed this book via Audible, however I don't think my opinion was affected by the reader. She was, in fact, very good. All of the stories in this book were about women that had been wronged in some way. Most were strong, heroic perhaps and all were dark. This in and of itself isn't bad, but in a way it made all the stories feel too similar. There were differences, for sure, in the stories and some of the twists were clever, but each successive story felt like an iteration on the them of the first of the book.I wish the main story, The Unremarkable Heart, was available on its own (I think it is in print) because taken by itself it was a compelling read. Unfortunately, it was last in the anthology and I was already tired of the subject matter at that point. If you are a fan of strong, tragic, dark, sometimes scared women lead characters, try The Unremarkable Heart first. Then, if you want to read the others, start back at the beginning and work your way through. Not impressed! Firstly, I didn't realise it was a short story until I got to 50%, but that was my fault I suppose. But then the story ended really abruptly at 55%. The rest of the ebook is an extract from another book... One of my pet peeves is when you think you've got 50 pages left and are expecting some action and then it ends suddenly and you discover the last 50 pages are 'additional material'. The story wasn't great... I think the end of the story was supposed to be shocking, but maybe I have read too many thrillers because I'd already guessed where it was going. I normally like Karin Slaughter's books so maybe I was just expecting too much. I'll stick to her full length books in future though!

These stories are very disturbing. I think I will stick to her other books.
