The Yellow House (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

This was an unpleasant read; I'm not even sure why I bothered to finish it. The main character was just awful. I didn't like her one bit and could not have cared less about her. I presume this is the author's version of a strong woman making her way in the world against difficult circumstances, but she just came off as a total bitch. Every other thing she said, she "snapped" (author's word choice, not mine), and everything was "fecking this" this or "fecking that". These clichés became quite amusing after a while - trying to guess how many times she would snap something per scene and what she was going to fecking complain about next. This character was a shrew and was unpleasant to everyone she came in contact with, so I found it impossible to feel any sympathy for her and her plight. Because I'm a bit prudish, I couldn't give this more stars. The profane language and some sexually explicit material is too much for me. That aside, the story began very slowly and I had a hard time getting into it. But long about chapter 4/5 I got invested in the story and finally finished it. I enjoyed the Irish lingo - and can still hear it in my head. It's a compelling, interesting, romantic novel about the history of No. Ireland.

What do You think about The Yellow House (2009)?

Another great book about overcoming obstacles and standing up for yourself. Loved the ending.

Sort of an Irish Gone With the Wind. Not as good though.
