Επιστρέφοντας στο Λ.Α. έρχεται αντιμέτωπος με έναν ακόμα φόνο, του Ραλφ Σίμπσον. Όλα δείχνουν ότι ο διπρόσωπος Ντέιμις που το πραγματικό του όνομα είναι Μπρους Κάμπιον, αφού στραγγάλισε τη γυναίκα του, δολοφόνησε και τον Σίμπσον που έψαχνε τον φόνο. Στο ανθρωποκυνηγητό που ακολουθεί, από τους κύκλους των τζογαδόρων της λίμνης Τάχο μέχρι το Λος Άντζελες, και με τη βοήθεια της Αστυνομίας και ενός γραφείου ντετέκτιβ της Νεβάδα, ο Αρτσερ συλλαμβάνει τελικά τον Ντέιμις/Κάμπιον. Μόνο που δεν έχει στα χέρια του τον δολοφόνο, όπως αρχικά πίστευε, και όπως θέλουν όλοι να πιστεύουν.Ο Μπλάκγουελ απολύει τον Άρτσερ λόγω απείθειας και αναιδών προς το πρόσωπό του υπαινιγμών. Ο Λιού είναι από εκείνους τους ντετέκτιβ που ως συνήθως δεν κρατούν τη γνώμη τους για τον εαυτό τους. Προσλαμβάνεται παρόλα αυτά από τη σύζυγο του συνταγματάρχη, την όμορφη και μυστηριώδη χήρα του εξαδέλφου του Μπλάκγουελ, Ίζομπελ.Οι ύποπτοι διαδοχικά αλλάζουν, μέσα από μια σειρά ευφυών ανατροπών και νέων στοιχείων. Πλέον οι φόνοι υπό διαλεύκανση είναι τέσσερις. Σε αυτούς του Σίμπσον και της Ντόλυ, προστίθεται ο πρώην άντρας της Ίζομπελ και ξάδελφος του συνταγματάρχη, αλλά και η ίδια η Χάριετ που είναι εξαφανισμένη και ίσως βυθισμένη στα παγωμένα νερά της λίμνης Τάχο.Τα στοιχεία και οι υποψίες δείχνουν διαδοχικά τρεις από τους πρωταγωνιστές του δράματος. Ισχυρές ανατροπές, ένα παρελθόν που στοιχειώνει, μια καταπιεστική σχέση πατέρα – κόρης, η υποκρισία της καλής κοινωνίας και βρώμικες προσωπικές ιστορίες που πρέπει να παραμείνουν κρυφές.Κλειδί για τη λύση είναι ένα παλτό χωρίς κουμπί και μια νεκροφόρα με ρίγες που χρησιμοποιεί μια παρέα νεαρών σέρφερ.Η νεκροφόρα των νεαρών περιγελά τον θάνατο. Σε αντίθεση με τον Άρτσερ που έχει δει και έχει ζήσει πολλά, ο θάνατος για τους σέρφερ είναι μακρινός και απρόσιτος. Για αυτό και διαπράτουν την ιεροσυλία της μετατροπής μιας νεκροφόρας σε παρδαλό όχημα όπου ζουν, περιδιαβαίνουν τις παραλίες και φυλάνε τις σανίδες τους. Κατά τα άλλα ούτε η νεκροφόρα, ούτε η παρέα των νεαρών παίζουν σημαντικό ρόλο στην εξέλιξη της υπόθεσης. Ο τίτλος του έργου είναι συμβολικός, πρόκληση στις θανατερές και μνημόσυνες καταστάσεις.Το φινάλε είναι αντάξιο μιας εξαιρετικής αφήγησης που παραπέμπει στα κλασσικά σχήματα του αμερικανικού αστυνομικού μυθιστορήματος, κλείνοντας ταυτόχρονα το μάτι στην αρχαία ελληνική τραγωδία.Η νεκροφόρα με τις ρίγες είναι από τα κορυφαία δείγματα της δουλειάς του Macdonald. Δεν είναι απλώς μια εξαιρετική αστυνομική ιστορία. Ξεδιπλώνει με αυτόνομο ύφος και ισχυρό χαρακτήρα ένα πλήθος προσωπικών ιστοριών της μεταπολεμικής Αμερικής με όλες τις συμβάσεις των κοινωνικών συνθηκών. Ανατέμνει δύσκολες και επίπονες οικογενειακές σχέσεις και συμπεριφορές. I had to pull a momentary rip cord on my Ross Macdonald Chronological Reading Society of One and bail out of The Doomsters for this one. I'll go back and finish it, The Galton Case, and The Wycherly Woman before moving on to The Chill. But it's summer, and the upcoming meeting of my Surf Noir Summer Supper Club/Alliteration Protection Society called. I stripped my responsibilities to their skivvies and took the plunge. First, what's sorta fun about this book is the extratextual history: set in July, published on November 15, 1962 (exactly two years before I was hatched), it captures the burgeoning surfing movement right as it was breaking nationally: exactly one week later, the Surfin Safari LP entered the charts at #114 ... maybe not the most impressive number considering the No. 17 album that week was The Stripper and Other Fun Songs for the Family, but one with wider cultural implications [unless you're a stripper]). At any rate, Zebra is an interesting generational novel, born partially out of Millar's grief over his daughter Laura's emotional problems. When Lew Archer has to hit the road looking for the runaway Harriet Blackwell, it's hard not to recall Millar's own odyssey in 1959 as he searched for his own runaway daughter in the skeezetopia of Reno. As Michael Kreyling notes in his wonderful study on Macdonald, Zebra can be read as a prescient foreshadowing of the moral collapse of Golden State youth culture. In her petulant contempt/dependency upon a disapproving daddy, Harriet Blackwell would later morph into Patty Hearst (or Leslie van Houten, the "spoiled little princess" whose surrogate pops was one Charlie Manson). Consider, too, that Zebra was Warren Zevon's favorite Macdonald bc he identified with the snotty surfer who owns the titular vehicle, and you begin to see why so many b-boomers, wondering why paradise rotted under the concrete jungles of their deviated septums, identify with this one.OK, it's got a few faults. As far-flung as Archer has to go to solve the disappearance, we readers ought to get gold miles. And the dead-bodies pile up more neatly than shirts on a Gap display table. Then there's the big MacGuffin, a trenchcoat whose peculiar button is a major clue, which feels a little too convenient when it shows up in an abandoned baby's hand. That said, there's a sexual perversity here that hints at the fixation with youth and innocence that would soon become a generational (and cultural) Achilles heel. Doll imagery abounds as much here as in Djuna Barnes, and that's a freaky cool thing.The sufers are really only in a couple of scenes, but they loom over the book like an ominous strain of sociopath disaffection. They're also closely connected to the bratty bohemian painter who oozes generational disdain like it's pimple puss. In this sense, Zebra makes a nice starting point for a study of surf noir, sort of the serious inverse of the absurdist (and go-nowhere while going everywhere) Inherent Vice. I have a feeling it's gonna be my favorite Macdonald.
What do You think about The Zebra-Striped Hearse (1998)?
After fifty years, this hard-boiled PI novel holds up well. The writing is solid and the plot starts out in scattered pieces that merge together. The best thing about it: it has a cinematic quality. The worst thing: the time line feels extremely compressed. PI Archer drives from LA to Tahoe to SF with an effort that could only be matched on Star Trek. Clearly, Macdonald chooses to skip references to actual elapsed time in order maintain tension, but it felt odd to me from beginning to end. Still, Macdonald is a solid writer and worth reading.

Ross Macdonald's Lew Archer detective mystery, "The Zebra-Striped Hearse" was one of the strangest, but creative, film noir stories I've ever read. Set in California and Mexico the main detective, Lew Archer, brought to mind Humphrey Bogart in "The Maltese Falcon" and Jack Nicholson in "Chinatown". Stylish, in a vintage late '50's/early '60's way, the plot was contemporary enough to hold up since its initial publication. It would even be an excellent choice for a contemporary screenplay created in the noir genre tradition. The aspect of the book that made it so memorable and unique to me was the way Macdonald described his characters and certain features that personified them. One of my favorites was was when he described what the character, Harriet Blackwell, was wearing at the beach house in Malibu-"a plaid skirt, a cashmere sweater, a snakeskin purse with an ornate gold-filled clasp that looked Mexican." By doing this, while carefully concocting an elaborate and gripping mystery, he definitely delivered a tale that gave me a big payoff and makes me want to read more of him.

Another good-enough Lew Archer outing by Macdonald, similar in tone and theme to The Chill (which I’ve also reviewed, and which followed this book by a year).In a way, The Chill appears to be a recycling of this book. Both involve hinkey doings surrounding a wealthy family, a rebellious daughter, an unwelcome marriage, patriarch-as-mama’s-boy, class-line clashes, hidden identities and casual murder. Both books even feature a character named Dolly. As you might imagine, a certain amount of déjà vu attends reading these two books together.The action moves around more in The Zebra-Striped Hearse (to the San Francisco Bay Area, Lake Tahoe and Mexico), although the setting details are (as was Macdonald’s wont) sparse enough to qualify as minimalist and as a result make little impression. Lew Archer noticed people, not places, and his economical-yet-evocative thumbnail portraits make the characters he meets stand out against the lightly-sketched backgrounds. The plot twists and turns with appropriately tight curves, and you’re in little danger of guessing the culprit before Archer does. As a mystery, it works fine. But noir is as much about atmosphere and attitude as it was about the puzzle, and atmosphere doesn’t seem to be one of Macdonald’s strong suits.If you’re looking for a period exploration of the Southern California surfing culture, which Zebra seems to promise, beware: the surfer angle (and the titular vehicle) are overplayed in the back-cover copy and underused in the narrative.Unless you’re engaged in reading the Lew Archer canon in order, I’d advise putting some time and distance between The Zebra-Striped Hearse and The Chill unless you enjoy asking yourself, “Didn’t I just read this?”
