Things No One Will Tell Fat Girls (2015) - Plot & Excerpts
Spoiler alert: There isn’t anything wrong with either. In high school, when I’d go shopping at the mall with friends, I would come out of the fitting room and say something about how a certain item fit, that I didn’t like how I looked in it, or that it was too tight for my fat ass. As in, my ass that was fat. Every time, my friends’ automatic response was, “No, you’re not fat! You’re _______!” Fill in the blank with “pretty,” “beautiful,” “gorgeous”; you name a positive adjective around beauty, and it was said. The issue was that I was fat, and I was pretty/beautiful/gorgeous. For me, it wasn’t an either/or situation, but given the way society views fatness, even when my friends were trying to be supportive they were reinforcing that fat was not okay. Fast-forward a few years. After having several knee surgeries for my osteoarthritis, and finally being diagnosed with severe chronic migraines and fibromyalgia, I was ecstatic to have the terminology around being disabled that I could identify with.
