Thirty-Two Going On Spinster (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
Thirty-Two Going on Spinster tells the story of Julia, a woman that is a bit stuck in her life and is therefore convinced that she is a spinster. This is a fast and somewhat silly read. If you enjoy chick lit and are in search of a lighthearted read, you will probably enjoy Thirty-Two Going on Spinster. I didn’t like the main character, Julia. She was a bit of a whiner, which was to be expected. What really bothered me about Julia, however, was her immaturity. Just because she was stuck in her life and hadn’t experienced much didn’t mean that she had to be immature and high schoolish. Her unending re-hashing of events was boring. I found myself skipping paragraphs here and there. The dialogue really bothered me. It was unrealistic. People speak using contractions. The first person narrative of Julia also didn’t use contractions, which I found unrealistic as well. I also had a hard time believing the romance between Jared and Julia. I was willing to let this go on grounds of poetic license, but Julia’s response to Jared at the end of the book undid me. The end of the novel was disappointing and a bit strange. Up until the final chapters, the novel moved very slowly with Julia re-hashing events over and over. All of a sudden the end is nigh and everything is resolved. It may make your head spin. I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review. Well, the first and best thing I can say about this book is that it has moments of brilliant funny-ness. Like- maybe a snort comes out while reading this book- funny. Yeah, this was one of the most comedic books I've read in quite awhile. Sarcasm at it's best. Most of this book is written from a place deep inside Julia's head. Sometimes I felt like I was stuck in a whirlwind of the same thoughts and feelings and I just wanted to get out or move on, but most of the time I was contented with the cheap entertainment I found there. One thing I loved about this book was the informal approach and feel to it. It really did feel like I was living in someone's head. And did I mention that it was funny? It was.Content: There was a handful of mild swearing. (which I didn't love. or think was funny)
What do You think about Thirty-Two Going On Spinster (2012)?
The book got a lot better towards the end. There was a lot less redundancy. The story line was good.
