This Is Not My Hat (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

For a few-worded children's picture book, the illustrations tell the true story of what happens when you take something that isn't yours. When a small fish decides that he can take the hat of a big fish, he thinks that he can get away with it, but the pictures show that that isn't the case. I love the dark colors of the pages with the bright colored eyes of the fish. This book would be great for beginner readers and it has a theme of honesty, irony, and consequences. In the classroom, kids at a young age, between 4-7 or so, could do a compare and contrast assignment on what the words are saying in the story and what the pictures are saying. This would be a fantastic way to get young readers to develop an eye for seeing what pictures do in a story. Another activity could be reading the first book to this sequel, I Want My Hat Back, and do another compare and contrast activity between the stories. Klassen, J. (2012). This is not my hat. Somerville, Mass.: Candlewick Press. Jon Klassenia hatuttaa taas! "This is Not My Hat" (Walker, 2012) on kuvakirja pienestä kalasta, joka saa päähänsä varastaa isomman eväkkään päähineen eikä edes osaa katua temppuaan.
