This Will Kill You: A Guide To The Ways In Which We Go (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

If the title and description of this book intrigue you at all, you'll love this book.[return][return]Ever watch the tv show 1000 Ways to Die? This is like a book form of that show. Each "way to die" has a description of how that method would kill you, how long it takes to die that way, an example or two of famous related cases, and various other stats -- all presented in a ... entertaining... way. I was going to say "funny", and the book did make me laugh at times, but at the same time, it actually doesn't treat death lightly. It doesn't actually make fun of the people who have died various ways, but isn't a serious book either.[return][return]It's not exactly the kind of book one would read more than once. I was sorry that I finished it because I wanted to read more! This gruesomely enjoyable book has 3-4 page vignettes on dozens of ways to die. From your standard heart attack (or myocardial infarction) to plane crash to radiation poisoning to death by alligator (which sounded the worst), the book gives a brief explanation, the scientific cause of death, and notable examples. It is lighthearted but not disrespectful. It's not going to teach you much or give you ways to evade death, it is just meant to entertain. The shortness of the vignettes make it easy to read one or two at a time--it's not really a book to read cover-to-cover. To be more explicit: yes, you should buy a copy for your bathroom.
