Sitting in the big overstuffed chair in her little sewing corner in her bedroom, Gabby paused with her needle in midair and glanced over at Nick snoring soundly in her bed. The sound was both a comfort and a torment. She liked having his solid form there, liked the warmth of having him in her bed, despite the heat. She liked the way he made her feel, the way he held her and looked at her like he really did believe she was beautiful and he cared. But still it was torture because she knew it wouldn’t last. How could it? Despite their dance, the way he held her, and they amazing way they’d made love, the world would turn back on, noisy and whole, and pull him away with sleeker, shinier, better things soon.
