OMG under no circumstances read this if you are remotely depressed!!!! It was just one awful thing after another!!, I am surprised Jake didn't top himself by the end!!!! The poor man has been through so much and still they can't let him be happy. There is depressing and there is DEPRESSING!!! I completely hated this!! if you want to read a cluster of bad things all happening to one character ( no happy ending) the. This is for you. Lily was the only redeeming character for me. I hated Maddie and wanted Jake to grow a pair. I skimmed through most of it. It bored me just how bad things got. Not an enjoyable read at all. Ms Hughes writes a good story and the tale of Jake and his relationship with Maddie unfolds throughout the book. It's an intense book, full of emotions and feelings and the characters are beautifully created. It's full of love and loss, anger and betrayal and shows how when one member of a close family or community is hurt, how the ripples spread out and affect so many people.I loved when Lily came into his life, her sense of fun and hope and insistence on living one day at a time. No spoilers but I didn't like the ending. After the gathering emotions in the book it all felt over and sorted too quickly but that's my personal opinion.If you enjoy a well written, well edited family story, you can't go wrong with this book.
