A jumble of red-roofed houses hugged the hillside, giving way to plazas and shops lining the quay, fronting the deep blue sea. An odd small building floated on a tiny island squarely in the middle of the cove. Small fishing boats bobbed in the gentle waves. Layla walked the length of the balcony and looked up to see the towering medieval Venetian fortress that dominated the town. A thousand steps to the top, she recalled. Ugh. Heights.
