A prostitute and a cop- what an unlikely couple. Jess was trapped under her pimp, Spence's rule, with nowhere to go. Spence made it known that she was his property and there was no hope of her ever gaining freedom from him. Gabe was an undercover cop who needed Jess's help to bring Spence down. There was an immediate attraction between the two, but Jess was so brainwashed and hopeless, she was hesitant to act on her desires. Jess and Gabe had a fun relationship with some pretty funny banter, but neither dismissed Spence's hold on Jess and were very cautious with their actions. No matter how safe they played it, Spence's actions ultimately caused Jess to nearly lose her life and cost her Gabe. There were some heartbreaking moments and poor Jess was devastated after losing everything. She was already a strong character, but she had to really man up and pull her life together all by herself. A miracle and a mix up with paperwork gave Jess hope again and a second chance at happiness, but her hesitance of "belonging" to someone and her feeling of being "owned" caused her to doubt what her future could become. Overall, this was a pretty good book, with some humor, mystery, romance and heartbreak. I liked the contrast between the characters and the way Jesse overcame all of the obstacles in her life. I would have liked to see a more developed "wrap up" at the end. It felt really rushed and left me with some unanswered questions. Throwaway is one of the best books I have read. It was honestly a very relatable book for me being a teenager dealing with society. Jessie was very strong girl who society turned her into nothing or in other words a throwaway. She didn't let that stop her from finding good in herself and in everyone else. It became hard for her to find that good in the works whenever she fell for a mysterious boy unlike any boy she had ever fell for before. It started just like any other relationship first just a crush then he got feelings for her and it became more than either one of them had ever intended on it to be. Jessie fought crimes, corruption and her own fears to still try and see the good in the world and to find the love she had always wanted. It seemed as if she was the only one fighting for love with that mischievous boy though.
