Tiefe Wellen (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

Beautiful, wild, a little creepy, dark, and I was confused at times. I'm still playing the ending over and over in my mind.I had no idea what this book was about when I started it, which is how I recommend that everyone goes into it. Clueless.Because Callie is a little unreliable as a narrator, your imagination takes over and starts filling in blanks and speculating and trying to make sense of what's happening. Mermaids or Callie's subconscious? A calling to the sea or a hereditary mental illness? We go deep into Callie's disturbed mind. I was almost relieved when the book was over because the writing is so good that you can empathize with her on a crazy real level. I felt what she felt. It was sort of unpleasant at moments. The ending. This is what all the fuss is about. Is she dead? What the hell? "That wasn't real", I thought to myself. "Just like her dreams and her sleepwalking, it was her subconscious." Right? Right? I could help but smile through my confusion. It was just so freaking GOOD. I don't get the magical realism that others have talked about because to me, it wasn't real. It was fabricated by a mentally ill girl. 5 stars because I want to read it again. Maybe later in the year. I have a feeling it's one of those books that will be the same but different every time I pick it up. This was REALLY not good. The mystery, such as it is, is never really resolved beyond what any genre reader can figure out within the first 20 pages or so. There's a tacked-on final chapter that completely changes the ending and takes away the impact of the chapter before it. The epilogue further complicates/takes away meaning from the ending. I spent 3/4 of this book waiting for the protagonist to catch a clue. Her father and her boyfriend were badly characterized. Pretty much the only good thing I can say is that the prose wasn't completely awful. This was almost a DNF for me.
