Tim Gunn's Fashion Bible: The Fascinating History Of Everything In Your Closet - Plot & Excerpts
TIES AND SCARVES Color Me Beautiful, Hermès, and Other Cults Neckties, bandanas, pashminas… Men in the nineteenth century knew dozens of ways to tie a tie; every man today should know at least one. IN PROJECT RUNWAY’S second episode of Season 2, “Clothes Off Your Back,” the designers were told to make an outfit using only what they were wearing when the challenge was announced. Designer Kirsten Ehrig lost the challenge in part because she was unwilling to risk marring her Hermès scarf. The scarf, apparently, was worth more to her than being on Project Runway. She wasn’t the first woman to be obsessed with an Hermès scarf—sorry, carré (French for “square”), as they’re called. Other companies, like Jacqmar, whose beautiful World War II–era scarves are collectors’ items, have produced exquisite luxury carrés, but the cult around Hermès is extreme. May I call to your attention the 1994 booklet entitled, How to Wear Your Hermès Scarf?
