I actually really liked this book. A fast read about a young girl in Italy whose home is taken over by the Germans during WWII. Her father is sent to the front to fight for the Germans and she is left behind to care for her two younger siblings and be cook and hostess to the house of 'guests'. The horrors of war are hard to read but this was done very tastefully without alot of gore. This kind of thing really makes you think about how fortunate we are to live in relatively peaceful times. I loved the spunky, strong and courageous main character, Benedetta. Great book I would recommend to all! Very cool book. I got lost in the story, and when it ended I was left with that empty feeling of wanting to know more, but knowing there's no more. ie, what happens after the story ends? heheI've read other books portrayed through the eyes of young girls at war time, but I think I like this one best so far. The sweetness and innocence were balanced out with the harshness and sometimes quite visual effects of war. Thankfully we're spared lots of gruesome details, but there are enough to make it more believable and heart-wrenching.
Good story about a young girl in Italy during German Occupation. Enjoyed the book.

Engaging, quick read about German-occupied Italy. Lackluster and deflated ending.
