Tom Clancy Full Force And Effect (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
This is a novel about the U.S. and North Korea and the story is surprisingly current in light of the "The Interview" movie controversy. As usual there is little character development, but this failing is compensated in part by the large number of characters making up the dramatis personae. The president of the United States is still Jack Ryan and many of the participants in the novel are familiar from previous novels.Plots and subplots abound and action takes place in many locations around the world. The technology is contemporary and a bit futuristic. Suspense is well maintained throughout the book. Talk about a current topic… North Korea is causing trouble. Because of its isolation from the rest of the world, it’s difficult for the US to exert any pressure upon it. Clancy novels have always seemed to be VERY accurate (and often precursors to current events!). The last novel involved a hacking attack i.e. think Sony! This is certainly a Tom Clancy-like story ... It's good. (In retrospect, I’d figure that Greaney has probably been ghostwriting Clancy for a while. He approaches dialogue slightly differently than Clancy – not badly, just differently. As I recall, Clancy used less F-bombs.) There’s a Kim Jong-un-like character … and if this is how North Korea really is, IT’S SCARY! OMG! I sure as heck hope he is not as crazy as shown. He is portrayed as despot ruler of the first millennium! (Dogs as method of execution!) The North Korean populous is also cut off from radio, TV, newspaper, and Internet and brainwashed – believing that the West is disease infested, rampant with crime and morally and physically decayed (Image, in a North Korean city square, a statue of a GI bayoneting a screaming Korean baby and you get their psyche.)Still, without money – “hard currency” – North Korea is just a big PITA, not a “threat”. BUT, what if it had rare earth metals? Enough to generate trillions of dollars?! Rare metals could become for North Korea what oil is for the Middle East! Money to buy anything – ICBM missiles that could reach the US west coast! The US would HAVE TO take them very seriously. With a very interesting premise – and a lot (almost too much) set-up – the book becomes a tale of spy tradecraft (with family ties) and patriotism. There are the same reoccurring characters from the prior series and numerous subplots (just as Tom Clancy would have liked). And the last 1/4 of the book is pretty much an adrenaline rush (+ a Presidential assassination + a geopolitical chess game)! Greaney does Clancy proud! I’m looking forward to more “Tom Clancy” novels from Mark Greaney.
