Tommy Glover's Sketch Of Heaven (2005) - Plot & Excerpts
This was a surprising read and ended up enjoying the story very much. The story is told mainly from a child's perspective - a child trying to make sense of the adults around her. This results in the story told in such a unique way. Kitty is an evacuee from London during World War II and is placed in rural English village. There is a mystery surrounding the couple she is placed with. The reason for their cold behaviour towards her, each other and those in the village is revealed throughout the story. This could of been a very dimsmal story but Kitty's intrepretation brought humour and warmth.
This book is set in the war years in rural England and involves a young girl who has been evacuated from London. I think the author captures the spirit of those times very well. The differences between the girl's background and that of the couple who foster her lead to conflict. The difficulties that arise when adults do not explain things properly to a child, who then misinterprets what s/he hears are very well described. On the whole the book is well written until about the last 10 pages ...which were a bit disappointing in comparison to the rest.
