Total Memory Makeover: Uncover Your Past, Take Charge Of Your Future (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
I really liked this book and it really changed the way I think about my past. Marilu has highly superior autobiographical memory and she helps others explore how to embrace their past and memory and build on that knowledge for the future. I did not always like her focus on herself.....I found that a bit tiresome , but her path was a good one. I read this book on a camping vacation in South Dakota and I actually started writing about my life year by year. I was amazed at the times that were vivid and those that were blurry. I was also interested to see that being let down by love ones happened fairly routinely and that knowledge has helped me see that sort of thing in a new less personal light. One thing I liked about this book , is that it has encouraged me to ask family members questions about their past and memory that I would not have thought to ask. It has helped me get a better handle on the life I have lived up until now. I also found it fascinating that she teaches you to explore past memories in detail. How fun! I did look for the calendar she recommends and did not find it. I was excited about this book and gave it a good try, but ultimately I was disappointed. Ms. Henner repeats herself over and over, as though she's being paid by the word. (I guess in a way, she is!) Things she told us about at the beginning pop up over and over again, and I found that annoying. I thought it was interesting that (in a book where she promises we'll be able to remember every class on our high school schedules no matter how old we are) she didn't think we could remember the same fact from one chapter to the next! The quizzes did nothing for me, and I felt as though I was slogging through pages and pages trying to get to......something. "Let's get on with it!", was the phrase that kept occurring to me. For many, many pages she talks about how she's going to help the reader improve his/her memory, but it seemed to me like a lot of talk and very little action. I started skimming toward the end, ultimately finished it, but was left feeling very unsatisfied. I wish I had used that time to read something more worthwhile.

Thought my brain needed a tweak. So far, so good. Marilu Henner is a really interesting woman.

gotta throw in something empirical every now and then to keep things interesting.
