Travers Brothers Book 1: Chief Cook And Bottlewasher (2003) - Plot & Excerpts

I got this free from Amazon.I love love love the title of this book. What a silly, cute, different way to title a book. It makes me laugh every time I read it. This was a fun, cute and quick read. I liked Emma and Deke. I thought Hestand did a good job with explaining the characters thoughts and how as humans we convince ourselves into something. The twist was a little different but not too different that it was crazy. The ending was short and abrupt but I found that I liked the way the author wrapped things up. I was left knowing that characters were well and happy and it was enough. Obviously, I would have liked more but maybe there will be a sequel. Emma Smith and Deke Travers don't exactly meet on the best terms when she runs into him during a midnight run to the store in the pouring rain. Throwing money at his feet, she makes a quick escape before he can ask too many questions. A couple months later, he finds her working at a local cafe. When he learns the owner is in a bind over her job when her old chief comes back for his job, he steps in and offers her a job at the family rance as a cook, not giving her the time to explain her little surprise.Finding her broken down on the way to the ranch he learns exactly what he didn't give her time to tell him about. Her 15 month old baby Sammi Joe. Although not thrilled over the surprise, the men at the ranch are soon taken over by little Sammi Joe. Although Emma is welcomed, she can't shake the fear she's been running from since Sammi Joe's mother, her cousin Kate left Sammi in her custody before she died. Now, she fears S.J's paternal grandparents will take her away from her because of their request to see the baby. So okay, the baby threw Deke a curve ball in his plan, but he's still determined to get his brothers to settle down and the first one is Clint with Emma. No matter how he tries, his plan just doesn't seem to be working. Worst of all, he's having the most trouble staying away from her. When he finally can't handle the thought of Clint being in love with her, he confronts his brother only to learn his brothers and father have been trying to set him up with Emma. Now with the all clear, Deke is determined to put actions with his new, consuming love for Emma. First he wants her to fianally open up to her and from her past comments, he figures inviting S.J's grandparents will be the start to easing her fear. Fighting and essentially breaking up, Emma tries to flee again with S.J but is blocked in by Deke. With no other choice, she meets for the first time S.J dad's parents. The truth comes out while Deke sits in silence, but the fear is erased when they voice no plans to take the baby away. They spend the weekend with S. J and leave with a promising relationship. Now Emma just has to fix the lies between her and Deke. The distance only grows as he continues to avoid her until his father finally pushes Emma to confront him. Storming into the barn, she finds Deke with a birthing cow. Making the time, both of them move on from the hurt feelings and embrace the future they have together.

The only thing I didn't like about this book was the cover. The book itself is sweet and refreshing.
