A variation on the tried and trusted trope of an almost on the shelf spinster being forced to marry a handsome Earl through a series of unfortunate circumstances.Having made that slightly disparaging comment, I did really enjoy this. Jack(ie) is an engaging heroine and I liked her her mantra of what do they want, what are they scared of. Probably the best characterisation in the novel for me was Giddy, he was totally unaware that he was falling in love and his confusing was endearing. This was only 77 pence but I would happily have paid full price for such a well-written book which tells a well-known plot with such style and adds a little something different For a debut author and book, this wasn't that bad of a read! It dragged a bit, which made it not quite 4 star worthy, but it did have something I don't see much of in historical romance: a heroine that is quite skilled in martial tactics and weaponry, not to mention intelligent as well. I liked the unlikely romance between the two of them, and even though this was a shorter novel, it didn't skimp on the plot. I have already purchased the second book in the series, so I'm hoping things will improve in that one!
What do You think about Trials Of Artemis (2013)?
Reads like a best-selling historical romance should. Lively, light, and with a beating heart.
