This is a really good beginning or even a stand alone. A whole new magic world, just getting to its industrial age. The magic is based on gifts given a birth by random people. And your fortune can be foretold or boosted by visits to the temples for more gifts throughout life, just reach in and pull out the little coins with the words on them! I loved this new magic!The heroine, Zoe, is feisty and determined not to let anyone she cares about be hurt by the Royals again. The Royals and their minions, I should say. Even if she is busy falling in love with the head minion! And finding out she's related to a royal here or there. When she uncovers the big secret, she acts to protect those she loves, and all hell breaks loose. But somehow it all falls into place, including her royal minion.I've glanced at the reviews for the second book and most readers were very disappointed in the second book. I'm worried, but I'm going to read it. This would be a 2.5.I thought Zoe was incredibly bland and Mary Sue-ish. The worldbuilding was interesting and Shinn's writing wasn't offensive. The worldbuilding is lovely and accounts for why i sped through the book so quickly. However. What is the point of a prime? Yes, Darien tells its that they bring "balance," but all this requires of Zoe is that she continues to exist. all Zoe ever seems to do is go clothes shopping and moon over her man. Aside from, y'know, causing a ton of infrastructure issues.
