True To The Game (1999) - Plot & Excerpts

Is having thrill and excitement in your life always good? Well in this book "True to the Game" a girl named Gena who came from the projects meets up with a "top dog" drug dealer and her life begins to go differently. Its all fun and games at first with all the shopping a money and lots of power , but then everything turns around when Quadir wants to get out of the drug dealing bussiness so him and gena can get married and live their life without worrying for their lives. The adventure that they go through to get outt he game with their lives will keep your eyes glued to the book. Quadir is a very educated man who came from a good family , even with all this he used his smarts on drugs instead on something real. When he first met Gena his world changed and he relized that somethings might have to change so life would better for both of them. Even though he wants to get out he knows that it’s not going to be easy to get out , especially with his life. What makes it worse is that he doesn’t get all the support he needs from Gena since she is lost in world with all the money and power. Gena's drama will also keep your eyes in the book. She was one of those people who lived in the "projects" but never acted like it. Then once she started dating Quadirher life becaome more exciting in her eyes even though she knew danger could come, which made her family and her old friends wonder about her and somewhat envy her also. Even though she had a little trouble with her family she had a lot of love for them. For example she would always try to help her aunt who they called "Gotget" when she needed money or somethingfixed around the house. Also as Quadir was trying to get out of the drug dealing game she was told to stay out of the public and stop spending so much money which was hard for her since she was spoiled. With all the drama and excitement comes sorrow . By this I mean that even with all his courage and motivation to get out the game Quadir dies trying. I think that some people wouldn’t like this book because of the sad moments. They may also not like this book because they feel that things could have been different if Gena and Quadir made better choices or Maybe even if Quadir didn’t even join the drug dealing businees at all. The thrill and excitment from this book will keep you on your toes and the sadness will make you feel sorry for the character , especially if something similar happened to you . This book is the best book i have every read so far and this book also makes me want to read more. I also like how the author made each character have their own personality and thoughts and didn’t make it seem like one character was copying the next. Since there is more than one book to the"True To The Game" series i can't wait to read the rest of the books to see what Gena will do now without Quadir and if she will turn back into her old self now that he is gone.

"True To The Game" by Teri Woods, is about a girl name Gena that lives in the projects she has a best friend name Shairah. One day they both go to New York thats where Gena meets a boy name Quadir. She thinks his really cute and wants to get to know him a lot better so she decided to get his number to keep in contact with him. After a few dates with Quadir, Gena realizes she really likes him a lot and he does to her too. He started to surprise her with lots of expensive gifts that she loved she couldn't believe she has met someone who can take her out of living in the projects. Gena finds out that Quadir is a drug-dealer and he goes around Philadelphia selling drugs etc. until Gena realizes she loves him and wants to be with him for the rest of her life, thats when they both decided to live together. Even though Quadir was never home Gena still loved him because she knew he was out their making the money they both needed he never said no to her she always got what she wanted. One day they go on vacation but that is cut short because Gena's best friend Shariah gets shot and kill. Gnea becomes deviated for a while but gets back on her feet because she knew that thats what her best friend would have wanted her to do. A few years later Quadir ask Gena's hand in marriage she approves. They have a whole bunch of money that they could live off of for the rest of their lives. A lot of people hate and do shady things in the drug dealing world so one night Quadir some friends and Gena are out celebrating New Years Eve, and thats were everything goes wrong a bullet almost hit Gena but Quadir jumps to save her and he gets shot on his chest, all his blood was gushing everywhere Gena became startled from the whole situation. They reached the hospital where they found out Quadir did not make it and he died. Gena became devastated again until the day she found Quadirs case with all the money he has saved up from drug-dealing. She felt something strange like if Quadir was with her all along but she was just glad that she had his memories and that would be "the man of life", of her life that she would love for the rest of her life. This book was so GOOD! because, of the way it was written you felt as if you were their watching the scene happening right in your eyes. This book made me realize that no matter what happens their would be someone out their in the world that will have your back. A question that I would have for the author is that is this book based of a true story?. I wouldn't want to change nothing from this book is perfectly written from start to finish in my eyes. I would recommend this book to EVERYONE. This book is amazing if your from philly and living in the "hood" you can totally relate to this.

What do You think about True To The Game (1999)?

I read this book in my early teen years, at that point in my life, this whole Urban glorified drug game ghetto fiction was captivating to me. I thought that the characters relatable, because there were so many girls that I knew, and my Philadelphia area, who were just like Gina. But now, I see that, this type of fiction, is inappropriate, there's so much of it going on in real life, that there is no need to write about such types of lifestyles, in books. I will say though, that when people say that the characters are underdeveloped, they don't understand that, in Philadelphia, that is all that these girls care about, Gena was a great representation, of the miss guided youth women, in my city.

I'VE COMPLETED READING A BOOK CALLED,"TRUE TO THE GAME".WHICH IS ABOUT A WOMEN NAMED GENA WHO HAS HAD A RECENT RELATIONSHIP WERE SHE WAS ABUSED BY A MAN NAMED JAMAL,SO SHE LEFT HIM FOR A MILLIONAIRE NAMED QUADIR WHO HAD IT ALL GOOD LOOKS,MONEY,JEWELS JUST EVERYTHING HE WAS A DREAM MAN A FANTASY.SHE HAD MET HIM AT NIGHT CLUB OUT OF TOWN WITH HER BESTFREIND SAHIRA WHO WAS BRUTALLY MURDERED DURING THE READING WHICH WAS A HEART BREAKING MOMENT. A LIL AFTER HER FRIEND WAS MURDERED WHEN SHE THOUGHT LIFE COULD'NT GET ANY TOUGHER HER 1 IN A MILIION DREAM GUY'S LIFE HAD BEEN TAKEN NOW SHE DOESNT KNOW WAT TO DO JUST WHEN SHE THOUGHT SHE HAS HAD THE PEFECT LIFE. I ENJOYED THIS BOOK BECAUSE I HAVE A FRIEND THAT WENT THROUGH SOMETHING SIMILAR. I WOULD SAY THIS WOULD BE AN TEXT TO LIFE. ALTHOUGH SHE DIDN'T GO THROUGH SOMETHING ABUSIVE SHE DID LOOSE SOMEONE SHE LOVED DEARLY TO THE STREET. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANY YOUNG ADULT FROM AGES 17 AND UP. I WOULD PREFER A PERSON OF THIS AGE TO READ, SO THAT THE PERSON CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT'S REALLLY GOING ON. ALTHOUGH THIS IS A STREET BOOK, I BELIEVE IN SOME WAY IT'S EDUCATIONAL, BECAUSE IT TEACHES YOU HOW TO MAKE CHOICES BEfORE MAKING THEM.

I read this book, finally, because I always heard good reviews about it. I honestly do not see why. The main character had no development throughout the book. She seemed to only care about money and how to maintain her lifestyle. The writing was going back and forth from different points of view often jumping around making it read like a school aged story. Maybe If I was eighteen I could appreciate this novel a little more. (It was such a simple read that I was able to finish it in less than 24 hours.)
