Twin Flames (Sumeria's Sons, #1 (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

This book intrigued me because it draws on Sumerian myth and that mythology is filled with poetry, adventure, and mercurial gods. The society of Lycans, the children of Enkidu, is one of the more fascinating shifter cultures I've encountered and I loved the deep sense of ritual, history and law that permeated the book. There's a bit of repetition in this part, but it never threw me out of the story, just caused me to lift an eyebrow. The characters also grabbed me, big time. Tristan is sympathetic, though at first I thought him oddly not angry enough at another character's betrayal. Later, though I had to suspend a lot of disbelief at the rapid revelations and accumulation of new powers, Tristan's assumption of his adulthood and leadership feels gritty and true. So does his love for Ushna, and I have become totally invested in this couple. I want to find out what happens next and I want to find out more about the intricate power struggles and permutations of this amazing world. At one point the story explodes with awesomeness and never lets up. Recommended for readers who love wolf shifters outside the usual pack dynamic, love fantasy, worlds with roots in ancient mythologies, and magic mixed with political intrigue and plotting factions. Amazing world building which creates this incredibly unique myth/lore set up make this stand out from all the other similar stories. Great characters that are framed by politics, legend, myth, lore, and love mean this book has a very fluid timeless feel. The writing is strong, clear, and concise. I've found sometimes with reading books that rely on myth or lore that there is a tendency to bog down and get lost in the myriad of details. Here we are told and shown and it really keeps the story fresh. Highly recommended!* Review copy provided for an honest review *
