Our author records a series of discussions, rants and beer chats from two blokes in an Irish bar over a year (2011/2012). They solve world problems (the Euro, the crash), world mysteries (where Gadaffi is - hint: he's a cleaner at Dublin Airport) and sports challenges. They talk about their kids and grandkids (one who has a penchant for exotic pets) and celebrities, especially dead ones.The friendship almost dissolves when they admit to their guy crushes, but it all works out in the end.Delightfully funny. This was a bit like Raven Girl by Audrey Niffenegger in that it was short yet very very enjoyable and left you wanting more. This definitely is a case of quality versus quantity (take note Howard Jacobson and your extremely drawn out Jewish joke The Finkler Question). Like Raven Girl I read in on my 1 hour train journey to work and it definitely made my trip more enjoyable. I am sure the guy beside me wondered what I was reading because I was laughing out loud quite a bit. Doyle has a great gift for recreating dialogue that seems wonderfully authentic and although it is quintessentially Dublin if you altered the dialect it would translate to most pubs. The two friends in the pub discuss family, the deaths of various celebrities, politics and various other issues with that inimitable wit that only such men have. This could be made into some kind of stage performance/movie/tv shorts. If you don't like expletives in your books then avoid this. Otherwise read and prepare to howl with laughter. Especially funny for people from or who know the island of Ireland well.
