UC_Fatal Fixer-Upper: A Do-It-Yourself Mystery (2008) - Plot & Excerpts

Wow, what a let down.I'd somehow bought a book much later in this series and loved it, but this did nothing for me. The characters were all surface, the murderer laughably clear, and the relationship between Derek & Avery gave me whiplash from one extreme to the other. Also, loling forever that Avery had no idea what a 2 by 4 was. Will give the next book a chance because I liked the later one, but really disappointed on this one. A woman, Avery, travels to Maine to visit her 99 y.o. great aunt, whom she hadn't seen in 25 years. The great aunt, who was a recluse, had sent Avery a brief letter telling her she needed to see her before she dies to reveal old family secrets. When Avery arrives in Maine her aunt is dead, just days before the visit. Avery learns the great aunt has left her everything, leaving out Avery's first cousins who live in the same town and always expected to inherit. The home left to Avery needs a great deal of work before it can even be sold. Bad things start happening, the house is robbed, someone enters when Avery is gone and breaks every piece of old china in the house. Someone wants Avery out of the way, going so far as to damage the stairs to the cellar so she falls down when the stairs give way. At the same time as the aunt dies a history professor at the local college disappears right after visiting the great aunt, the last person to see her alive. The professor and great aunt have been meeting for months. Why? Avery has made a few new friends, including a handyman who is repairing the house and the chief of police. Can they solve the mystery of the missing professor, find out the great aunt's old secrets, and protect Avery?
