Un Merveilleux été (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

When I had only read the first two chapters, I thought this book would be horrible. But it really grew on me! Once it got past the cliches of poorly written beach reads, I decided I actually enjoyed the plot and the characters, for the most part. There were a few random things thrown in that seemed like she knew she wanted to get to a certain event but didn't know how to get there, so she made up something totally out of the blue. But the book kept me intrigued and entertained, and she wrote the chemistry between characters really well. Overall, I'd say if you're looking for a quick, cute read, this is a good choice! This book came to me at a time when I wanted something light to read, something bubble-gummy take-to-the-beach-and-laze-in-the-sun to read. I scanned the first page and the writing was good. I took it home. Gobbled it up. Sweet, with a nice kick.I love to be transported to a fictional town were everyone pretty much knows everyone else, and it's not Peyton Place. Not that I have anything against Peyton Place. But sometimes I like a town that's a bit less gossipy and dark with secrets. Something a shade lighter. Butternut Lake is just such a hue. There's romance, drama, and oh yeah, sex, (but not too racy if that's a concern). Mary McNear is generous with the inner thoughts of the characters, which I found intriguing as a writer. The bad boys are a nice blend of wild nature with hearts of gold, without coming across as corny. The women struggle to find their way, but they don't lack strength.I didn't read book #1 of the trilogy, but I look forward to giving it a go the next time I'm in the mood for a romantic getaway (fictional, of course). Fans of Susan Wiggs will enjoy this series by Mary McNear.
