Un Regalo Per Daisy (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

A 77-year-old woman travels to New York City to find the soldier she loved during WWII. She stays at the home of cousins she's never met and the family becomes involved in her search for the soldier. This book reminded me of Maeve Binchy in the types of characters and events that happen. I really liked the story and would have given the book 4 stars except for the author's irritating writing style, eg:Daisy, feeling tired, wishes she could go to bed.Not once in the entire book did the author use any other tense and it made for a somewhat awkward reading experience. I had to restart sentences numerous times to get into the groove. A lovely story lessened by annoying writing. I loved this book!!!All of the characters needed one another in such interesting ways. Daisy is an elderly English woman whose son thinks she can't take care of herself anymore. To show him, and herself, she decides to go to America to find a long lost love. She stays with some relatives who live on Long Island. This family doesn't know it, but they need her desperately. Forgiveness, self-inspection, rescue, selflessness--all of these play an important part in this book. And of course, alls well at the end--in a very cute and satisfying way.I also liked the way the author connected the dialogue. Instead of going through the same old "He said, she said", she just made statements of purpose. Short and direct. I found it intriguing. Sometimes I get tired of all the many ways an author can say "He said", or He exclaimed", or He shouted", or "He stated", etc.I liked this book very much!
