I was really digging this one until I put it down and got distracted by another book. It isn't this book's fault (I don't think), I am just going through reader ADD right now.I did have some issues with the story (for example, how did the brothers know based on touch that Khara was their sister? I'm not spoiler tagging that BTW, because it happens REALLY early on). Also, the story was taking a bit too long to actually explain what was happening and was doing more teasing than delivering, which was getting on my nerves a tad.Now for the positives: I was seriously impressed with Khara's "voice" in the narration. She actually read like someone who had spent centuries the way she had and I'm not sure how easy that is to do, but to carry it off consistently in first-person is something most authors can't do without lapsing into some sort of more conversational mental dialogue. I also thought Khara showed promise as a kick-ass heroine, although it was hard to tell since when I stopped reading, not much had happened to test that. It's hard to have an opinion about the brothers, although I am intrigued by Oz and his role in the whole story. All in all, I could see myself coming back to this one. No rating because I didn't get far enough into the story to get a read on it, but I am interested in seeing what happens. I'm just not in a hurry to do it. Khara grows up in the underworld with Hades for her father. She is grabbed by a dark one from Hades and dropped off in Detroit. She can't move or talk until a stranger comes up to her asking "are you an empty one?" and then touches her. Suddenly she can feel and talk. The stranger is Drew, a warrior and her brother.Ohara goes home with Drew to discover she has several brothers--all who are warriors. They patrol Detroit to keep it safe from the different supernatural groups. The brothers are all sons of Ares, who has father many sons but killed all of his daughters. How did Khara escape from being killed? There is also a fallen angel who helps with the supernatural groups as well as "enjoys" himself. (When Kara was not in the underworld she lived with Demeter. Khara is a pawn for her real daughter, Persephone so doesn't care for Khara. In fact she ends up hating Khara.) Something sinister has come to Detroit now that Khara lives there. Supernatural beings are not behaving causing the brothers along with Oz to try to discover who is after Khara. Who is making the supernatural beings go after Khara? This is urban fantasy. It is a fascinating story. I found it quite interesting due to the mythology and angels in this novel. At first, I was not sure that I would like this novel but found myself enjoying it immensely. I can't wait for the next volume! Disclaimer: I received a digital galley of this book free from the publisher from NetGalley. I was not obliged to write a favourable review, or even any review at all. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.
