Unbroken (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

Unbroken is about a girl named Rebecca Brown who lives in New York with her dad. She has family in New Orleans, and the last time that she was there, she had an interesting trip. When her father proposes another trip down to New Orleans, she sees a boy with piercing blue eyes staring at her. She learns that he is a boy named Frank. She also learned that he was murdered in 1873 in New Orleans. He asks her if she could help him retrieve a locket that he dropped the day he was murdered, hoping that if he returned it to the rightful owner, he wouldn't have to live the rest of eternity as a ghost, wandering the streets of New Orleans. She agrees to help. While in New Orleans, Rebecca sees old friends, family, and a few ghosts scattered throughout the streets. Rebecca's problem is that she can see all of these ghosts, but no one else can. She's the only one that can really deal with the locket situation. On page 155 it says, "Two blue eyes, like cold, crystal lakes, searing into her from the other side of the street. Frank. 'No,' Rebecca said, closing her eyes. 'No more.' 'Becca!' Ling's voice echoed and faded. 'You're really scaring me!'" I picked this quote because it shows how she can see Frank and her best friend can't. Ling thinks that Rebecca is trying to scare her. Eh. Unbroken wasn't as good as the first book in the series. It was a nice complete hero cycle story at least, you have to give it that much, but the writing was just painful to read at some parts and I went through quite a few grimaces and face-palms before I was through with the book. The characters pretty much lack any development, the plot is really simplistic, and there isn't much substance to the book. I didn't really like how there is no discussion whatsoever about the rest of the ghosts in the city and what their fate will be, the poor things doomed to wander forever on Earth. I did like the break from traditional paranormal stories with the involvement of a whole team of friends working together. In most paranormal books I've read recently, there's this strange tendency to keep things super secret and exclusive. On the flip side, most of these characters were kind of annoying and seemed forced. Anyways, I found Unbroken to be a short, quick read that I enjoyed as a sort of break from heavier material, and I think its worth at least a try for anyone looking for a quick fix to paranormal story cravings.
