Une Guirlande De Neige (Un Roman De Noël Victorien, #1) (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
This was an enjoyable Christmas read. It takes place in Scotland on Christmas Eve, 1894. Meg Campbell, a young school teacher has taken the train home to visit her parents and only sibling - a bitter, angry shell of a man. Because of a huge snowfall, her train fails to make it through the snowdrifts and she must return to her parents' home. Due to the train issues, she becomes acquainted with another passenger, Gordon Shaw. The couple is drawn to each other and discovers that they have a shared history - a very unpleasant one that involves her brother. The two are striving, each in their own way, to forgive and reconcile with their past. The setting is Victorian and the images of what Christmas used to mean regarding gifts and family is heartwarming. The author ties up all "loose ends" in the story. It made for a very warm, "feel good" reading experience. This is a lovely little Christmas story set in Victorian Scotland. It has a great sense of the time and place, good character development and a believable story.I was touched by the situation caused by a youthful mistake, but how it all played out bothered me quite a bit. I know this is about forgiveness and redemption and love, but I have a huge problem when someone has purposely, not at all accidentally, made everyone's life a misery by his own choice and no price is paid for that. In fact, this person is generously, far too generously, in my opinion, rewarded for his lies, scheming and selfishness. For me, that soured the beauty of the ending, somewhat. Still, all in all, a good read, but a little disappointed in the ending.
