Unha Com Carne (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

A somewhat confusing crime thriller that has characters from several of author Leonard's prior novels coming together.Thriller - Jack Foley (Out of Sight (1996)) befriends Cundo Rey (LaBrava (1983)) in a FL prison. Cundo pays a lawyer who gets Foley's sentence reduced. When Foley is released a few weeks before Cundo, Cundo sends him to his home in Venice, CA, currently occupied by lover Dawn Navarro (Riding the Rap (1995)). Foley is trailed by an FBI agent sure that he will return to bank robbery. Usual Elmore Leonard guilty pleasure. This one features Jack Foley, bank robber extraordinaire, in a mildly complicated story of who's conning whom. (This is the same Jack Foley from Out of Sight, the movie version with George Clooney as Foley and Jennifer Lopez as Karen Cisco - Clooney was perfect casting, he is Jack Foley.) The other main characters, Cundo Rey and Dawn Navarro, have shown up in other Leonard books, according to the book jacket.Through the characters interactions Leonard makes some interesting observations on the attitudes and relations of men and women that seem to me to be spot on.A quick, fun read.

When I learned Elmore Leonard had died I also learned of the existence of this book, a sequel to Out Of Sight. This may the most disappointing book I've ever read. Painfully boring and the worst thing I've read of Leonard's. It pains me to say it so close to Leonard's passing but I gotta be honest. Jack Foley is a great character and bringing him back was welcome. There are flashes of Leonard's genius but spread way to thin. Ugh. Bloody shame.

a bit anticlimactic. Funny characters though.
