Katie heard a faint beeping, a deep hum, and finally the rustling of clothing as someone moved. Giving up, she opened her eyes. A woman stood over her, consulting a small device. She had short brown hair with contrasting red streaks that stood out from her head in spikes. Her eyes were just as dark as her hair, and they made tiny flickers of movement as she studied the screen on the gadget in her hand. Her skin was so pale that it was nearly pearlescent, complemented by the woman’s tight black bodysuit. “Where am I?” Katie whispered, glad to see that at least her mouth worked even if her body didn’t.
