The three doctors telling their stories in this book are clearly incredibly inspirational, intelligent, and driven. I do take issue with how preachy, moralistic, and black and white the stories are, as well as how invested they are in the "American dream" (work hard and you'll achieve great things). I understand the importance of encouraging young folks of color especially to set high goals and work hard to achieve them. I just wish there was less shaming of folks who don't take a "respectable," high-earning path. “We beat the streets” is a great success story. It’s about three friends that meet in high school. As time goes by, they make a pact that they will go to college together. But before they meet, their childhoods are filled with drugs, violence, and jail time. They all in their childhood promise that they would never get involved with drugs. All three do something that takes away from those who use drugs. After making it to college, the three friends start to rap. With this they get to meet the great and legendary, BIG.E. This is before he is killed. This book is a great influence for several reasons. A main reason is because it’s all about how all three friends come from the streets and getting in trouble to how the three go to and graduate from college and they all become doctors. This basically shows us that no matter how much trouble you were in, college is still an option. This story can teach you that it doesn’t matter where you come from, anything you do to get you to success is possible. If you consider that, then it is possible for you to go to college.
