What Did You Expect?: Redeeming The Realities Of Marriage (2010) - Plot & Excerpts
Viewing arguments and marital stress as acts of mercy from God is not something I'd ever thought about until reading What Did You Expect. This alone has changed my marriage, and ultimately my life. When we recognize and grasp this principle, we are able to joyfully extend grace and truly put our spouse's needs above our own ... bringing glory to God, restoration to our marriages, & humility to our souls. What Did You Expect? : Redeeming the Realities of MarriageBy Paul David TrippWheaton, IL. : Crossway, 2010. 287 pages.Prior to their weddings, couples are unprepared for what married life really turns out to be like. They marry expecting that their new mate loves them as much as they love themselves! Brides and grooms “expect” marriage to take the shape of their pre-marital misconceptions. Couples set themselves up for major conflicts with these romanticized delusions. Hence, the subtitle, that to succeed a marriage requires our conscious attention in order to redeem the relationship.Paul Tripp explains how to live out the Gospel marvelously. I previously have read one other of his books and I have studied a series of his messages (not on the subject of marriage). Tripp has earned my highest respect because he speaks to your heart. He does not give you platitudes or familiar lines. Tripp breaks the reader free from the sinful patterns we have grown to accept as the norm and shows the way grace should transform our relationships.Marriage requires regular maintenance and investment. Any couple, married for any length of time, could profit from reading this book. Tripp explains the role of faith and worship better than anything I have read elsewhere. He likewise breathes new life into the discussion of what love is and how you can demonstrate love as you live with your spouse. I have used this book for the required reading with two couples who I counseled prior tot heir marriage. I unreservedly recommend it.

Great content burdened by needless repetition. This is a book badly in need of a good editor!
