I had a bit of trouble getting over the main characters naïvety in the beginning. Or of the never questioned turn around of Lucas after the initial battle. I am normally not one to fuss on motives to much but that did bother me a bit, to have him all of a sudden be all willing to help her after being so hostile..Then another point. How does he as a old vampire all of a sudden fall in love with a 17 yo newly turned without a good explanation? I mean even twilight used Bella's 'scent' as a trigger for Edward (ok I loathe having to compare the two as they really are not alike as such) but honestly you can not tell me after being together a couple of centuries with another lady then can just all of a sudden be swapped of his feat by a girl that has no clue and got his family killed.I suppose the writer may be hinting on her 'Zest of life' but even so, she is newly turned after all.. how long is that going to last? He knows all to well the jaded part that is to come with being immortal..Anyhow, If you can get over this, the story does get a lot better. The action is good, and so is the fact that our main girl gets over her initial 'I cant do it' attitude. I did not see that ending coming either somehow, which surprised me.. (or the abruptness of it). This book starts a bit drb but then takes of with the speed of light.Needles to say I will be awaiting the second part and hope it will redeem itself even more. We all dream of having that summer romance in an exotic location - Paris, Tokyo, London, Rome. The excitement, the thrill, the uncertainty. Admit it, we dreamed of it one time or another, probably influenced by books or movies. I did. When I read the first chapters of What Kills Me and Axelia just took up with Paolo like that, all I could think about was the sheer stupidity of the main character and hoped that that particular strain won't last for the remainder of the book. Escape through the window, disregarding curfew, sure. Strolling around well-lit streets eating gelato, fine. But following a stranger, A STRANGER, to a dark, dingy place was the mother of all of stupid. YOU JUST MET THE GUY! HE'S A STRANGER! Oh, it's so romantic. He's so good-looking and his face looks so genuine and earnest and he's sharing something important with him... Don't come crying to me when you become a vampire because it's your own fault.I guess I didn't hate this that much except for what I ranted above. I could also rant about the instalove bit since I don't really get how Lucas nor Axelia could fall for the other given that they've known each other only for days. I could also attribute the danger factor because nothing bonds like shared danger and close encounters with death. Funny thing is I didn't really mind the instalove bit. Don't ask me why.The vampire culture and the hints of clans, Ancients, the Monarchy and the arrabbiata, sorry, Aramatta are interesting. The story was fast-paced though. I wish it could have been expanded. But the book was centered on action and urgency so I guess immersing oneself in the vampire culture atmosphere was not possible.
