What Makes Olga Run?: The Mystery Of The Ninety-Something Track Star Who Is Smashing Records And Outpacing Time, And What She Can Teach Us About How To Live (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

What Makes Olga Run is an inspiring book about a remarkable woman. It is amazing to realize that Olga Kotelko was a masters athlete that completed into her 90s. Because of her rare athletic ability, the author decided to follow her to see what make her so special. Not only is it unusual for anyone 80-90 years old to compete in track and field events but it is also more rare that she won so many events. She seemed to beat the odds by remaining healthy and injury free as a senior athlete. The idea of anyone that age competing was intriguing and the thought of observing her seemed priceless. Bruce Grierson clearly spent a lot of time with her and had an enormous amount of respect for her. Still, I thought the book could have been more captivating. There were many stories about her attitude and her daily routines. He looked at her diet, sleep, attitude and even DNA. The book blended subjective information about her what she thought and felt along with scientific facts obtained during medical tests. The end of the book summarizes what the author feels helped with her longevity and with her athletic abilities Many are common sense like eating, to keep moving and manage stress. Others are hard to prove like being kind, believing in something and having a sense of progress. Probably the most powerful for the reader are the last two; don't do it if you don't love it and start now.The author says that this process may pose "more questions about what affects longevity than answers". and I think that is true. If you're looking for answers, this is not your book. Still it interesting to read about a woman that has great athletic ability and truly enjoys life. This woman started exercising (started track) at 77, after being retired as a teacher for 12 years, and this book is inspiring/motivating/scaring me to start exercising again. After extensive research, it was found that exercise is the MAIN ingredient in living a long life and for health! And not exercising is very detrimental to your life span. I will review the book once I finish it. It's a MUST READ for ALL WOMEN!!December 8, 2014:I finished the book and IMMEDIATELY went back and started reading it again! I think I'll probably have to buy the book, as I have it from the library. It is the BEST non-fiction book I've read in 2014, so far. Again, I highly encourage EVERYONE to read it; it's not just for or about women. And there's too much information in the book to tell you what, specifically, you need to do to promote longevity and good health. It's all good information and very doable. I especially liked the chapter on Personality.
