First off I really wish I could rate this book higher than 5 stars, Kelli McCracken has out did herself. I don’t even know how that is possible because the first two books in this series were amazing. I love the Soulmates story; Heaven and Dylan are fighting so hard to just have a normal life. But being part of a life with special abilities and finding out new mind blowing information on a daily basis, it’s very hard to even have a life at all. What the Heart Takes reveals a lot of information to deepen the story. Faith has returned and she throws one hell of a curve ball into the story. Will she ever be happy, that is real question? Hope returns as well with her own interesting turn of events. With so many secrets coming out in this book you never know who will appear. We all wish we could find our soulmate so we could live happily ever after, Kelli tells us a story of heartache, turmoil, and of course love, letting us to believe it’s not just finding the one. It’s not all about finding your one true love; it’s about so much more, about how hard you have to fight for that person. While anxiously awaiting the birth of their child Heaven and Dylan are fighting like hell to protect their baby and spare each others feelings. Heaven and Dylan are soulmates, that’s a given, but how does Layne really play into all this? Layne has had his fair of struggles and in this book he, himself is fighting the hardest battle so far. I just want to reach into the story and cuddle up to Layne myself. It’s hard enough to be someone’s Keeper, but while he’s fighting an internal struggle will he remain her Keeper of just walk away from it all? If Dylan had his way Layne would be gone, for good. I keep hoping the three of them, Dylan, Heaven, and Layne; can reach some sort of middle ground and save each other. To say that I loved this book is an understatement; I can’t put into words how amazing this book is. It’s very well written and flows from one page to the next flawlessly. I can’t wait to read what happens to all the Soulmates. Great job Kelli McCracken on writing another book that I couldn’t put down! 4.75 stars - EXTREMELY WELL WRITTENIn What the Heart Takes we see the bond between Heaven and Dylan continue to grow stronger. Instead of being able to focus on their new roles of husband and wife, they're learning about their abilities and trying to ensure the safety of Heaven and their unborn child. Now that Layn knows his role in Heaven's life, his struggle only grows as he battles with his feelings for Heaven.Throughout the story we learn more of the history between the parents and the "secret society" they were born into. Bonds are tested and more secrets are revealed that will pull you to the edge of your seat. We meet new characters as the support for Dylan, Heaven and Layne grows."Love isn't about what our hearts want or need. It's about what our hearts take to keep breathing. My heart takes you."I found myself so consumed with this story that I couldn't put it down. I kept my Kindle app open and couldn't put my phone down. The storyline and intense emotions between the characters more than made up for the fact that I could barely see straight for a couple of days. This latest installment of the Soulmate Series is a rollercoaster for your emotions. I felt the story drag just a bit in some spots but overall, I was impressed. The ending had me rolling around screaming because I have to wait for the next book. It was not something I expected. Another very well written story from Kelli McKracken. This Naughty Mom gives What the Heart Takes 4.75 stars
