This was knda boring. Very cliche! As though the author took her characters (and dialogue) from television. The annoying female cliche cop ACTUALLY SAYS (twice, while interrogating 2 different people): "But you wouldn't know anything about that, would you?"WOW! Dragnet! Officer Friday delivered a better line. The snake angle was fine, different and new, but it was such a fast read becuase it was soooo cliche and boring. I dont care about most characters in genre fiction, but when I start to hate them (Evangeline always seems bitchy or on the cusp of bitchy, like everyone's against her ... is this how all cops are in cop fiction? Everybodys out to get them, shoot first ask questions ... etc. And you want me to like a charatcer like that? Root for them? I usually want the bad guy to kill the cop in that scenario, but I always seem to like the bad guy over the good guy whom I'm SUPPOSED to like ... hard to do when theres nothing to like about them.)Anway, I'll stop being on the cusp of bitchy (see what that character did?)Read something else. Finished! I stayed up until 1:00 am finishing it - and on a school night too! In general I liked the book but could be very nit pickie about it. **Spoilers** I had it figured out after Chapter One that Evangeline would be the missing baby. Sometimes the bookcovers give too much away. If she hadn't been...that would have been the twist. I was surprised about Lena/Rebecca/Ruth twist and it was great! The part about her parents divorce seemed to be thrown in for some reason. If she wanted her parents to be divorced so her mother was alone - fine. But the chapter about her father's affair seemed out of place. One little detail - if she was so worried about her baby, why didn't she take the baby to bed with her? Sometimes the little details detract from the whole of the book. I don't think New Orleans was as much of a character as the letter to the readers indicated. Other then saying some unsavory people had moved into New Orleans since Katrina, there wasn't much flavor there. Now the bayou, that's another character! I'd like to see another book about Evangeline, she's a good character who's ready to be explored.Novel Ladies November Group Read
