Inasmuch as I also had the "Gentleman's Edition" and chose to read the original unabridged version, I will refrain from rating this book. The unabridged version is unnecessarily revolting. Based on the ending, I believe the author could have presented a quite charming tale of Holmes, Watson, Adler, and the Ripper but chose instead to go for shock value. Fooled me once. I'll never read anything by this author again. I really did enjoy this book from the first page to the last. Even through the murder, gore and gruesomeness it was great. There were parts where I actually laughed aloud. All of my emotions were put into play coming to the end of the book. I was touched by the interactions between Watson and Holmes, enlightened to see that Holmes really did have a heart, saddened by a lonely passing and pleased to see that Johns cases with Holmes would go on for ...
