Why I Fight (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

Why I Fight is an action filled book about a boy named Wyatt and his Uncle Spade. The book starts out with Wyatt leaaving his parents and going to live with his uncle. His uncle Spade is a very unstable person. He never stays in one place for very long, traveling all over the country selling various items. Wyatt helps him sell things, until he figures out he has a nasty punch. Spade then starts enetering him into fights for money. Wyatt swears that the first time he looses he will quit fighting. Wyatt has a nice streak going but finally looses. They then have no where to go, and Wyatt decides to go back to try and live with his parents again, but quickly gets into a fight with his dad. The book ends with Wyatt leaving his parents and going to live on his own. What I really liked was all the action and suspense packed into the book. You never knew what would happen next and it always kept me on my toes. All the fights were really cool to read because they were full of detail and action. What I didnt really like was that alot of sentences were grammatically incorrect and confusing to read. Also, Wyatt really never seemed happy. It would have been nice to see him be happy for once sometime in the book. All in all it was a great book. I would recommend it to all teen boys, or to people that like wrestling or fighting. Its full of all sorts of excitement any age male would love! Why I Fight by J. Adam Oaks was a very captivating and fun read. I was glad I chose to read this book because the author gave great detail, and he made me feel like I was a part of the story. However, it did get confusing at times and it was very easy to loose focus. This blood-rushing book is about a 13 year old boy who gets adopted by his gambling addicted Uncle Spade. As the book progresses and Wyatt and Spades’s relationship grows, Spade discovers that Wyatt has potential in being a great fighter. Spade starts to train Wyatt to fight like a man, and starts entering Wyatt in several fighting matches. Unfortunately as the story evolves, Spade’s gambling addiction starts to take over his life once again. He begins to bet on Wyatt’s matches and endangers his relationship with Wyatt. Wyatt Reaves did not have the ideal life; he had to adapt to living with his uncle Spade after his parents just didn’t want him anymore. He was a strong-willed teenager trying to find himself in his unsettling world. Spade became very devoted to Wyatt and meant well, despite his gambling problem. It truly takes a compassionate man to take care of a child that is not his own.I will leave it up to you to find out what happens next. Overall, this was an intriguing story and a well-written novel, which held my attention. I would definitely recommend this book to any young adult reader who wants an action packed story.
